HEAD START
Head Start is a federally funded program for low-income families with preschool age children (3-5). Some "over income" space is available for children with special needs. A child must be three (3) prior to August 31, to qualify for this program.
We provide activities that help children grow mentally, socially, emotionally and physically. For parents, we offer a variety of trainings and supports to promote family success with their child and in their home. We firmly believe that parents are their child's first and most important teacher and that family strength and values should be recognized and built upon to create stronger communities.
We provide a variety of programs throughout Okanogan County. Click here to find a program in your area. We have one Home Base program in the North County (Oroville Tonasket and Loomis areas). In the Home Base program children and families meet with the Head Start Home Visitor once a week for 1.5 hours. Families attend two 3.5-hour socializations per month.
Various Center based options are located throughout the rest of the county. In a center based option children attend class 4-5 days per week for 3.5 to 6 hours per day. A minimum of two staff is available in each classroom. Classroom size ranges from 16-18 children per class. Most preschool classes start in September and end in May.
